Reflections from
Leo Sim

Secretary General, Youth Path Agency

Seoul-based Youth Path Agency provides comprehensive support systems for youth facing social, emotional, or economic challenges.

Youth Path Agency has been a Member of Accountable Now at the “Friend” tier since 2025.

What first connected you to AN, and why did you become involved?

I first connected with Accountable Now while establishing a robust impact reporting framework for Youth Path Agency. As we sought to validate our social value and enhance our organizational transparency, AN’s global network offered the rigorous standards we needed to ensure our operations met international benchmarks.

Where did you see AN making the biggest difference during your involvement?

The most significant change I have witnessed is the shift from passive compliance to “Dynamic Accountability.” AN has championed the idea that accountability is not just about financial reporting, but about actively engaging the communities we serve. For us, this reinforced our commitment to Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) and evidence-based methodologies.

What does accountability mean to you today, and why does it still matter?

Today, accountability is synonymous with trust. As we tackle critical issues like youth addiction—spanning digital media, gambling, and drugs—the trust of the youth, their families, and our partners is paramount. Accountability ensures that our interventions are effective, safe, and truly serve those in need.

Looking ahead, what do you think is most needed to continue strengthening accountability in the next decade?

To strengthen accountability over the next decade, we need more accessible and adaptive evaluation frameworks for local and grassroots organizations. Providing continuous capacity building so that organizations can accurately measure and communicate their intangible social impact will be essential.

How has AN supported your org’s accountability journey?

AN has been instrumental as a guiding compass. Particularly as we prepared for our social enterprise certification and evaluated our Social Value Index (SVI) indicators, the frameworks provided by AN helped us structure our governance and internal policies to be more transparent and stakeholder-centric as an Executive Director overseeing these operations.

What has the world demanded of accountability over the past 20 years?

Over the past 20 years, the world has demanded that civil society go beyond mere financial audits and basic outputs. Stakeholders now demand evidence of real, sustainable outcomes, urging organizations to prove their social value and demonstrate genuine inclusivity in their decision-making processes.

What does the next leap in civil society accountability look like to you?

The next leap in civil society accountability will likely center on digital ethics, data transparency, and participatory governance. I envision a future where the people we serve—especially the youth—are actively sitting at the table, evaluating programs and shaping policies directly alongside us.

Celebrating our 20 Years in Focus Anniversary Campaign, these reflections are part of our “20 Reflections From 20 Years” Series. This series gathers perspective from folks across AN’s two decades to reflect on Accountable Now then, now, and tomorrow.
