Independent Review Panel Members (voluntary position)
Do you think that the accountability of international NGOs is of increasing importance? Would you be interested in joining a small group of thought leaders and experts from across the globe who play a key role in strengthening this accountability? Then consider applying to join Accountable Now’s Independent Review Panel!
Accountable Now (previously the INGO Accountability Charter) is a global network of many of the best known and largest CSOs in the world who have come together to commit to working towards ever higher standards of accountability and good governance, in particular, to be transparent, responsive to stakeholders and focused on delivering impact. Currently, 27 international CSOs are Accountable Now members
. These CSOs have agreed to abide by the 12 Commitments of the Global Standard for CSO Accountability – a globally aligned set of principles and practices of good CSO accountability, adopted in June 2017 – and are required to report annually against these commitments.
An Independent Review Panel (currently seven members) reviews member CSOs’ annual reports. The Reporting and Assessment Framework and Reporting Questions were updated at the end of 2017, bringing these in line with the new accountability commitments and introducing a more impact-oriented, timely, and flexible reporting process. The new framework and questions will be used by Accountable Now members from 2018.
Panel assessments are made public and members have described how these assessments have triggered a significant improvement in their organisations. The Panel adds great value to the reputation of Accountable Now as an independent and robust accountability mechanism. You can find all members’ reports and the relevant feedback from the Panel on our website.
We are currently seeking 2 to 3 new members over the course of 2018. We particularly need people who have had very considerable experience in CSO governance, gained in leadership roles either in major NGOs, in standard-setting CSO networks (such as national or international CSO associations), or in academic comparative analysis of CSO governance.
Key tasks and workload
Annual or biannual reports of 27 Accountable Now members have to be individually assessed. Small groups of 3-4 Panel members meet several times throughout the year to do this, with meetings conducted via video conference (e.g. Skype or GoToMeeting) and lasting around 2 hours, covering 3-5 reports. There is a 3-4 hour joint meeting of all Panel members once a year, and a two-day face-to-face meeting every 18 months to discuss broader strategy and processes.
The Accountable Now Secretariat pre-screens the reports with regard to completeness of the provided information and a preliminary assessment of their quality. It is the Panel’s task to give a detailed quality assessment of members’ reports, which ensures the credibility and integrity of the reporting process and provides stakeholders with the confidence that members are complying with the 12 Commitments.
Throughout the year, each Panel member is requested to review 2-3 reports as first assessor, 2-3 reports as second assessor and have a general impression of the remaining reports. This requires the equivalent of around 7 days’ work per year.
A motivated Panel member should have the following profile:
- Considerable experience of international CSOs in at least one sector
- A strong interest in driving improvements across the sector with regard to transparency and accountability
- Strong sense of ownership for assigned areas of responsibility
- Reliable and able to work collaboratively online
- Experience serving on the board of an international CSO, and/or experience with the business world, is desirable
Workload: Ca. 7 days per year
Salary: None – this is a voluntary position (travel and accommodation for face-to-face meetings is covered)
Term limits: Three-year term from the date of joining the Panel (with the possibility of extending for one additional three-year term)
Your application should consist of a CV and cover letter expressing your motivation (in English). It should capture why you are a suitable candidate for the Independent Review Panel and tell us something about how you would shape this position. Please send it by email in one PDF document, stating your name and “Independent Review Panel” in the subject line, to Accountable Now’s Programme Manager, Ezgi Akarsu ().
The deadline is 11 March 2018. In case of any questions, please get in touch via the same email address.
We look forward to receiving your application!
